Helen Martessa Black Davis, age 83, of Cherryville, passed away Friday, April 10, 2026, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain. She was born on October 2, 1942, in Lincoln County, to the late David Dow and Mallie Irene Smith Black.
Helen was in the Cherryville High School class of 1960, where she graduated with honors and as head majorette. She then began her banking career with Cherryville National Bank around the year 1967. She stayed at the bank for many years, and in 1984 the bank became Southern National Bank, and in 1995 it became BB&T. After a long career in the banking industry, beginning as a teller and eventually leading to becoming an educator and trainer for others entering the banking career, she retired in 2012. After retirement, Helen worked at Belk’s. Also, after retirement, her and Jack had time to enjoy their lake house at Lake Norman. Helen and Jack also enjoyed snow skiing, dancing at the Moose Lodge, and traveling. Helen was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cherryville.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Davis.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Sabrina McGinnis Bowyer; brother, Dr. David Black (Debbie); sister, Barbara Hastings (Keith); grandchildren, Wes Bowyer and Ashley Bowyer; nieces and nephews, Kevin Hastings (Lisa), Kim Peeler, Heidi McInnish (Joey Parr), Abbi Hobbs (Mark); and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
The Funeral Service for Helen Davis will be at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cherryville with Pastor G. Scott Homesley officiating. Out of respect and privacy, the family will receive friends from 2:00 - 2:45 PM, prior to the service at the church.
