Janice Stroupe Howell

Janice Elaine Stroupe Howell, age 82, of Cherryville, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Peak Resources of Cherryville. She was born April 4, 1943, in Gaston County, to the late Garland Russell and Naomi Hinkle Stroupe. Janice was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church where she served on numerous committees. Some of those committees included the building committee, refurbishing committee, and served as an Elder Emeritus. She received her bachelor’s degree in business and retired from Bellsouth. After retirement, she was proud to take on the role of babysitter for her granddaughter, Kenzie. Janice was also an excellent caregiver for her mother, Naomi. She was known as the family event coordinator and enjoyed getting the family together for special occasions.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Edwin “Jim” Howell, Jr.; brother, Jerry Stroupe; and nephew, Bentley Howell.

Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Heather Porter and husband, Joel of Cherryville; sweetest granddaughter, Kenzie Porter; brother, Johnny Stroupe (Brenda) of Cherryville; sisters, Joann Weaver, Kay Hallman, and Bobbie Jean Gantt all of Cherryville; and nephews and nieces, David Stroupe (Cindy), Wesley Howell (Jennifer), Donna Abee (Mark), Terry Stroupe (Francine), Rusty Stroupe (Karen), Mike Weaver, Cathy Stroupe (Jon), and Cynthia Jones.

The family will receive friends Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Heather and Joel Porter.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 3:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Leonard Bumgardner and Rev. Rusty Stroupe officiating. Inurnment will follow at First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
