James Edwin “Jim” Howell, Jr., age 84, of Cherryville, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Carolina Care Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born November 28, 1940, in Lincoln County to the late James E. “Pete” and Virginia “Ruth” Ford Howell. Jim retired from Carolina Freight Carriers as a longline driver. He went on to work as an electrician with Cherryville Electric. Jim was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard. He was a lifetime member, with 40 consecutive years, of Bessemer City American Legion Post #243. Jim was also an avid NASCAR fan. Jim enjoyed making his rounds and visiting with friends. He never met a stranger and always shared a laugh with everyone.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Robert “Corky” Howell and wife, Judy; and nephew, Bentley Howell.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Stroupe Howell; daughter, Dr. Heather Porter and husband, Joel; granddaughter, Kenzie Porter; and nephews and nieces, Wesley Howell, David Stroupe, Donna Abee, Terry Stroupe, Rusty Stroupe, Mike Weaver, Cathy Stroupe, and Cynthia Jones
The family will receive friends Monday, June 9, 2025, from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Heather and Joel Porter.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Bill Lowe and Rev. Rusty Stroupe officiating. Inurnment will follow at First Presbyterian Church Columbarium, with military honors.
