John F. Hines, age 89, of Cherryville, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at his residence. He was born September 2, 1936, in Lincoln County to the late George and Alice Gamble Hines. John was a United States Army Veteran. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville. John retired from Carolina Freight Carriers’ Parts Department. He enjoyed reading, especially Westerns. John was the go-to when you had something that needed to be fixed. He knew how to tinker around just enough to solve any issue. John loved going camping and taking trips to the lake to go out on the boat. He found peace sitting on his farm and watching nature.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Gantt Hines; grandson, Trent Gardo; and siblings, George Hines, Jr., Donald Hines, Linda Gantt, and Jane Schmelzer.
Survivors include his children, Jeff Hines and wife, Beth, Teresa Hines Gardo and husband, Brent, and Greg Hines; grandchildren, Wayne Hines, Matthew Hines (Evangeline), Sarah Hines Doski (Peshwar), and Tracy Gardo; great grandchildren, Rue Doski and Ellie Hines; sister-in-law, Brenda Gantt; and brother-in-law, Jerry Gantt (Lisa).
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 22, 2026, at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Zack Christy officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.
