Leonard Jack Mayo, age 92, of Lincolnton, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at his residence. He was born March 6, 1934, in Lincoln County, to the late Sgt. Johnny Greene and Margaret Rhyne Mayo.
Leonard was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a Christian and believer, who enjoyed reading and marking in his bible. It brings comfort to his family to know that Leonard is finally home in Heaven with his wife, Jan, which is what he always wanted. Leonard was a smart man with lots of common sense, who was always learning. He enjoyed music, especially Conway. Also, feeding squirrels, riding around in the snow, and picking wild onions. He was a gifted mechanic who liked working on cars or anything mechanical. Leonard was the boss man, gadget creator, and self-proclaimed weather man. He loved talking about and checking the weather, telling stories, and discussing ways to save on his power bill. He was good with his hands and could often be found building or modifying things. He was also full of wisdom and was a storyteller. Leonard loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than anything.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Jeanette “Jan” Hedgepeth Mayo; son, Danny Mayo; sister, Judy Mayo Scronce; and paternal grandmother, Lizze “Maw” Mayo.
Survivors include his sons, Jackie Mayo (Sarah Billings), and Daryl Mayo (Beth); daughters, Linda Black (Rick), and Renay Weathers; grandchildren, Lisa, Ritchie, Keith, Angie, Ashley, Justin, Britny, Todd, Kristian, and Brandon; and twenty great-grandchildren.
