Olin Louis Bumgarner, age 88 of Cherryville, passed away Friday, April 17, 2026, at his residence. He was born May 16, 1937, in Caldwell County, to the late George Wesley and Ola Mae Seate Bumgarner. Olin was a retired Captain of the United States Marine Corps. He was a proud veteran and member of the American Legion Post #100, the DAV, and the VFW Post #1706. He also received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Gardner Webb where he graduated Cum Laude. He went to work for AT&T and then later part-time with Edward Jones, as he enjoyed dealing with investments. Olin also enjoyed golfing. He was a faithful member of Cherryville First Wesleyan Church and had a great love for children.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Etta Helms Bumgarner; brothers, Leroy, Donald, Stanley, Lloyd, Bobby, and Merle Bumgarner; and a sister, Jeanette Bumgarner.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Grigg Bumgarner; children, Nelson Bumgarner, Susan Biglin, and Lori Béen and husband, Jefferson; stepdaughters, Teresa Smith and husband, Danny, Amy Turner and husband, David, and Kim Crane and husband, Stephen; sister, Peggy McSwain and husband, Sherrill; sisters-in-law, Betty Bumgarner, Peggy Bumgarner, and Libby Beam; step-grandchildren, Charlie Smith, Robert Smith, Kelly Setzer, Adam Crane, Stephanie Crane, David Turner, and Rachel Smith; and 10 great grandchildren.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 3:30 PM at First Wesleyan Church with Rev. Mark B. Poe officiating. Burial will follow at Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, from 2:30 to 3:15 PM prior to the service at the church.
